SOD-523 - cannot generate 3D model by entered dimensions

#1 Post by jgerhardy » 19 Nov 2025, 10:37

Hello DipTrace-Team,

working with DT 5.2.0.2. When generating a IPC-7351 SOD pattern for an SOD-523 part (TI ESD751-Q1), I am receiving the error message:
"Unable to generate 3D Model by entered Dimensions. Check the values or select another ED model Source"
A screenshot of the dimensions used is attached.

The genertated footprint is correct and it is possible to use the 3D-Step model supplied by TI, so this is not a job stopper, but I would
have expected the SOD model to work for an SOD part. Will this work better with another model?

Kind Regards,
John

For "L" you entered the total length of the pin. "L" is actually the contact area of the pin which is much smaller.

Based on your screenshot, the values listed for size L are 0.2–0.4 mm, but in the datasheet the leads have a different configuration compared to the drawing for the SOD package family in the package generator. Because of this, the program cannot generate the 3D model — the curved lead doesn’t fit there. SOD packages have curved leads. In the datasheet the lead is straight, so you need to use the SODFL family instead.
