I can see how to modify the default pad before making a placement.

But I cannot see how to select a previously modified pad as the new default pad shape for new placements.

I get around this by copying & pasting the previously made pad, but this is a slow process.

In Pcad every time I modified a pad, I could save & name the modification and select the
modified pad name to be the new default pad for new placements.

As every cad program is different, could someone please point me in the right direction ?

You can use pad templates. When you edit standard pad properties, you can click on ... button and save current pad as template. Later when you edit different pad you can open templates and choose of previously saved pad templates.
