Still having trouble with 3d preview

#1 Post by flicker177 » 24 Sep 2023, 09:05

I posted about this a long time and many revisions ago. I still have intermittent hangs when doing a 3d preview. I have a message box that says "Search 3D Models" that just stays there forever. It has a button that is labeled "Skip" and that's the only way to get out. Once this happens, it never works until I close and re-load DipTrace PCB. I've tried all graphisc modes, no difference. I have all models in a single folder and that's the only folder specified in 3D models search.

Sometimes if I open DipTrace PCB and immediately do a 3d preview with no file loaded, close that, load the file I want, and then do a 3d preview of it, that starts it working but not always. Sometimes if I load a different file, do a 3d preview of it, close that file and load the one I want, then the 3d preview works. If I try enough things, I can eventually get it to work but sometimes only after 4-5 tries. Once it starts working it continues to work until I close DipTrace PCB.

There *is* something weird going on here. Anyone else ever encountered this?

Thank you for the report. The problem is that it is difficult to reproduce the issue because there are many factors that can affect. To get started investigation, please provide the following information:
a project you often have the problem with and all custom 3d models, information about DipTace version, operation system, videocard.

Hi Alex,

Yesterday I tried to reproduce this with no luck. I tried many pcb's and 3d render worked fine on all of them.
This morning I tried using a very simple file with only DipTrace provided components and models.
3d render froze with the "Searching 3D Models" box every time. After I closed and re-opened DipTrace PCB a few times it started working and then kept working. Feels like a race condition somewhere to me.

System:
Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz
Installed RAM - 8.00 GB
System type - 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition - Windows 10 Pro
Version - 22H2
OS build - 19045.3448

Video - Nvidia GeForce 210

System and program drive - SSD Kingston SA400S37960G
Project, component, and models drive - rotary Seagate ST2000DM001-1ER164

Diptrace Standard version 4.3.0.5

Very simple pcb file attached. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I attached the schematic file by mistake.
Attached this time is the pcb file.

We have fixed the issue (or similar one that caused "Searching 3D Models" message to remain forever) in our source codes. The next version will include the fix.

Excellent!!
I'm surprised at how fast the response was! This has not ever kept me from making fine PCB's but when it happened it was annoying for sure and impacted my workflow. DipTrace is great and you have the support to back it up. I look forward to the next version, thanks again.

I think we all have gotten that error at one time or another, I'm glad it's fixed. I was having issues with a CAD/CAM application on a i5-9400 system or 4 year old system, I just finished building a 'current' i9-13900 system with last years Nvidia controller RTX-A4000, 4TB Samsung NVMe M.2 drives and 64GB DDR5, about 2 seconds to the login prompt after power on. A 12 minute auto-route on the i5 is less than 2 minutes on the i9. The new computer does not have the render issues in the CAD/CAM application the i5 had.
The reason I brought that up is:
i7-3770 2012 11 years old
GeForce 210 launched on October 12th, 2009 14 years old
ST2000DM001-1ER164 2011 12 years old

Did you know that a Nvidia RTX 6000 has 18,176 GPU cores, has passed 1.4 PFLOPS on less than 300 watts? I have a Nvidia Quadro 5000 from 2009 that cost $2400 new, 352 GPU cores, 2.5GB memory and does 722 GFlops at 152 watts.
I also have an i5 2nd generation that runs my Linux based Nvidia Jetson management software....

Yup. That machine is rock solid for everything I need to do. I'm not into replacing a bunch of hardware that's working perfectly for me. Its running a recent Windows 10 install and Micro$oft validates it. It runs all my apps fine. If DipTrace has a bug that somehow disappears with newer, faster hardware (perhaps due to a race condition or something,) that should get fixed and evidently will be. I don't do complex boards and the performance of DipTrace on this machine is so good that I have no real reason to update hardware at this point.

Some antivirus programs may interfere with DipTrace's file access, potentially causing issues with loading 3D models. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software and see if the 3D preview works consistently.
