Wine crash after sleep/wake on Mac OS Sonoma

#1 Post by GMinchin » 15 Oct 2024, 00:19

Ever since I upgraded my Mac to Sonoma a few months ago, DipTrace has crashed if left running when my Mac goes to sleep and then wakes.

I first noticed it when still using DipTrace 4.3.x.y, but the behaviour is the same with 5.0.0.0.
With 5.0.0.0, the menu bar shows the application name as WineskinCX23.7.1-3_rc2. I assume that's the version of Wine that's being used. That might be the same version that 4.3 showed, I didn't write it down. It was certainly similar.

The crash doesn't happen every time the Mac sleeps. I get the impression that if I only close the laptop for a few minutes and then wake, all is good. But longer sleeps (e.g. overnight) nearly always cause the fault. The symptom is that DipTrace (any of the applications - schematic, PCB, component, pattern) is unresponsive and the mouse cursor is the spinning ball of death. I have to go into Activity Monitor and force-quit a wineserver process (can't remember the exact process name that I have to kill, but it's obviously a wine process) and a bunch of wine64-preloader processes (about 10 of them, sometimes).

I didn't do anything unusual while installing DipTrace, just the usual workflow. And in any case, the fault appeared after upgrading the OS to Sonoma without any change to the DipTrace installation.

I never had this problem with OSes before Sonoma, and I had several versions of DipTrace.

Thank you for the report.
Please rename existing installation and install DipTrace build 5.0.0.1. Wine prefix was updated in the latest DipTrace build. Please let me know if you still has the crashes.

I can confirm that the problem still occurs with 5.0.0.1 and 5.1.0.0.

The symptoms just happened again, but with a different trigger. This time my Mac didn't sleep, but I unplugged my two external monitors. DipTrace was running on one of them. All desktops appeared on the laptop screen as expected, but DipTrace had hung.
This time, I ran "Sample process" in Activity Monitor before force-quitting. I've attached the result, in case it helps.

If the error only occurs when DipTrace is open on the external display, try moving it to the main display before disconnecting.
