Net Class, I'm confused and stuck

#1 Post by old school » 22 Jan 2025, 18:09

I'm baffled with net class. I had tried to assign my high current +12 and GND nets to a wider track, and after some searching on-line and trial and error. I succeded. I thought I did that in schematic. Now I forgot how I did it and can't turn it off or change it. Or make anything else follow my net class changes in schematic. Right clicking the net GND in schematic and properties, I find "Connect nets by name" checked and there are no other indications of anything special even hinting to a .05 width rather than default .013 track width. However, autorout creates these tracks as .05 regardless. Like I said, I changed it "somewhere" in the past. Moving forward, I found I can also change by net class in the PCB, and yes, I have a net class with both +12 and GND nets selected and .05 width. However, upon moving them back to the default net and autorouting, I find them again at .05 and them changed back to the .05 net class. How in the world did I "net class them" in the first place, how do I undo it, and what is the best way to do a net class for track with/spacing changes like this. I had 1st assumed schematic would be best, since then any complete PCB revision in the future, would always follow those specs. Was I wrong? HELP.

Also, I have a whole bunch of nets ie connectors to fuses to diodes, etc that all need to be changed in the same way.. once I figure out how to do it. Is there a quick way to click on the schematic or tracks and cumulative say net class all these? Or do I have to manually say ok this is net1, this is net2... and then go into net class and manually click on net1, net2....

Thanks

You can open "Objects -> Net Classes" in Schematic. On the dialog window, you can add new net classes if necessary, move nets between net classes and edit each class properties (trace width and clearance).
An alternate method of changing net class of a net is the following, Right click on a net, open its properties and change net class on the dialog window.

You can edit net classes directly in PCB Layout (Route -> Net Classes). Even more, there are more net class properties in PCB Layout.
