3D visualization generates 0 byte step files from a valid layout
3D visualization generates 0 byte step files from a valid layout
Has this been reported previously? At least twice a (different) design fails consistently to generate a step file from the 3D preview, producing an empty file. With a large file it is clear that the generation just aborts halfway through without any error messages. In that case i located the culprit and it was a perfectly ordinary resistor that showed OK in the schematic, layout and 3D preview, but caused step generation to abort. Deleting that component and inserting a new one in the schematic fixed the problem. This is not practical workaround however since it took a long time to find the fault by elimination.
Attached is a simple file that does the same. I have not analyzed it further.
Software is v.4.0.0.5 (Jul 30) full license.

Hi,
I'm having the same issue.

I too am facing the same issue now!
Diptrace v4.1.3.0 on Windows 10 Pro.
And, unfortunately, can't share the file since it's confidential.
Please suggest a workaround soon.

Re: 3D visualization generates 0 byte step files from a valid layout
Hi,
I have 2 different issues, and one is the same issue described here - .step export generates a 0 KB file. I'm using DipTrace 4.1.3.0, full license.
The other issue is that a generated .step file (a small PCB module with a bicolor connector and a diode) have only 549 KB, but it freezes the machine when it has to run a 3D visualization, no matter if it's on Pattern Editor (when choosing a 3D model for a pattern) or PCB Editor (visualizing the main board with this module). The machine is a HP470 G7, with an i7-10510U, with 16 GB RAM, running Windows 10 Pro 21H1 from SSD. Other 3D models, included in the DipTrace libraries, runs smoothly. This one was created by exporting .step in different combinations, starting with Solid (recommended).
Sorry that I could not include the design for first issue, since it's a commercial product. For second issue, freezing the machine in 3D visualization, I could send you the PCB design and generated .step file by e-mail. It will be useful to have an option to generate an issue report directly from DipTrace.

We have fixed this issue. You can download and install the last update 4.1.3.1:

Re: 3D visualization generates 0 byte step files from a valid layout
After upgrading to 4.1.3.1 I was able to export the .STEP file and import it as a 3D model into design without freezing the software. I believe the bug was somehow fixed in this version of DipTrace.
Thank you!

While testing I found no issues with 3D export, I created a PDF of the export.

Re: 3D visualization generates 0 byte step files from a valid layout
I had the same issue with empty step file as described above, while 3D model was loading correctly in Diptrace. Now I updated to 4.1.3.1 release and the model gets into infinite loop while loading in Diptrace. It seems to choke on some component and starts over again, repeating forever. I have to end task the program to stop it.
