Improved access to frequently used functions.

#1 Post by Grebu » 12 Mar 2018, 14:08

DipTrace has a good set of functions. But some frequently used functions are well hidden or are missing a keyboard shortcut.
The directly accessible toolbars with icons (e.g. New schematic, open schematic etc ...) are lacking some frequently used functions.
Furthermore some functions are only available as shortcuts and elsewise completely hidden (no menu entry, no toolbar button)!
Below I will list some functions that should become more accessible:

Schematic Editor:
  • delete wire - should have a button/ shortcut instead of being hidden in a right click menu. Should also be the default when pressing delete for a net instead of "delete line", which is a pointless function in comparison.
  • align - hidden in the hotkey settings, no toolbar button, not even a menu entry!
Layout Editor
  • Ratlines - Optimize : has no toolbar button
  • Update all copper pours : has no toolbar button and not even a shortcut by default
  • make a copper pour unpoured : complicated to access
  • unpour all copper pours : hidden in the hotkey settings, no toolbar button, not even a menu entry!
  • align - hidden in the hotkey settings, no toolbar button, not even a menu entry!
Those functions listed are likely to be useful in most workflows, so improving their accessibility is essential for a good user experience.
If you have more suggestions please add them.

Updating the user interface with the next version would be very welcome. Especially hiding the features of DipTrace in the shortcut menu can't be what the developers want.

Agree on all of those. It would be nice to have menu buttons that appear appropriately to the current context (when routing, editing, etc). right-click menus are good for some things, but buttons and shortcuts are the quickest (and have the least key-strokes)

Bumped up.
Selecting a wire and then pressing delete should only delete the wire between nodes. Right now it deletes the wire based on the history on how it was drawn, creating lots of unconnected nodes without a predictable result, which is pointless.
This option exists in the right click menu, but it should really be the default option when hitting delete. Please make at least an option to change the default action to this.

Pouring and unpouring happens a lot during optimization, so this should be way easier to access.

Diptrace gets more and more features, but it would be great if you could put some work into usability again. A couple of common activities are made unneccesarily difficult by the user interface.
You already got all those great features, so why would you hide or obscure them? ;)

Yes, I fully support you with this request.

Bumped up. Deleting a wire with the delete key still rips up whole nets based on its drawing history. Deleting the wire between nodes should be the default for pressing the delete key on a wire. Or at least an option to make it the default would be welcome.
All other criticized points remain unchanged as well so far.
