Support for 3Dconnexion devices for panning and zooming

#1 Post by kb9ydn » 16 Aug 2016, 15:21

I've been using Diptrace for a couple weeks now and I'm liking it a lot. However, coming from a mechanical CAD background I'm finding the lack of support for supplemental interface devices quite disappointing. Specifically I think it would be great if the 3Dconnexion devices could be used for panning and zooming. These devices are ubiquitous for view manipulation in mechanical CAD software and I think they could be put to great use in Diptrace. In addition to panning and zooming the higher end devices have additional buttons that can be programmed for nearly any function. This could be a significant boost to productivity with Diptrace. See here for the range or products they offer:

They also have a free SDK for developers that want to add support for 3Dconnexion devices:

Thank you for request. We don't plan this feature now. We will consider it, if will be a lot of requests from our customers.

Hi,

I second that request.

I have two of the 3Dconnexion devices and when a program provides support that can be a great help.

Better late than never...
I would also love this feature added.

This feature would help me a lot, as I use this 3D mouse on daily basis.

lol, yeah I can see the frustration from a mechanical CAD engineer. ;)

Although to my knowledge most other PCB/EDA don't really use this feature.
3D in PCB design is mostly just to get a decent indication how things are gonna look.
Not really being used for proper 3D work, since that's part of the mechanical department I suppose.

I would also appreciate this feature and would make use of it if it were added.

I believe that the more options you have to interact with a piece of software, the better.
Please, have a look at the 3D Connection SDK. Perhaps it's not such a big thing after all?
A nice starting point would be to let the 3D mouse manipulate all the parts of the program that already has 3D support, like the component model preview and of course the PCB 3D view.
Once that is in place, I guess more interaction point will come naturally.
I have 3 of these devices myself, one at work, one at home and even a "travel" version in my sports cabin, just in case... :)
