I have a schematic whose layout is finished and routed. I now wish to duplicate (copy/paste or otherwise) that schematic and create a total of 4 of them. Then a new connector will be added to the design and different connections from it made to each of the duplicates. The connections from the new connector to each duplicate will not all be the same. Is there a way to have the layout of the duplicates match the layout of the first (similar to how panelizing works) so that I do not have to layout and route the duplicates ? I would then route the new connections from the additional connector.

Or is there a way to work backwards from panelization to accomplish this ?

Hi Steve-
The best way I can think of to do this would be:
1. Save a copy of your schematic by a different name and change the connector.
2. Make a copy of the PCB layout by a different name, open the layout and then choose "renew design from schematic".
3. Give it the name of the schematic file with the new connector
4. Only the connector will change on the PCB layout.

There may be a simpler way, but I'm pretty sure this will work.

Rick,

But first I need to make duplicates of the schematic that I have already routed. I want those newly added individual duplicates to have the same PCB layout as the schematic they originate from. If I do a copy/past in Schematic, then renew from schematic in PCB Layout, the duplicates come in without any positional arrangement or routing.

Hi Steve,

Rick's method is correct but I think you want more detail:
1) make a copy of the original schematic file - call it <name>-1.dch
2) make a copy of the original PCB file - call it <name>-1.dip
3) edit <name>-1.dch and replace the connector then save the file
4) edit <name>-1.dip
5) unroute the wires to the existing connector
6) update by component using <name>-1.dch as the file
You will now have two sets of independent files whose only difference is the connector

In Step 3), I am not replacing a connector. I am instead adding a new connector that was never there before. But I also need to duplicate the existing schematic and its already layed out pcb. What I found to work is to simple copy and paste the layout as many times as I need then copy and paste the schematic to duplicate that as well. Then in layout, Renew Design From Schematic > Renew by RefDes. Nothing actually visualy changes when doing the renew.
