When I do projects in Eagle I keep my PCB outlines in a component library as one of the components shown on the schematic. I am wondering if this can be done in DipTrace? This method has several advantages. The bare PCB can be a part on the BOM to be included in pricing and show manufacturer and part number. In the schematic the conductive mounting holes can be connected any way the designer wants. It also prevents the shape from being altered while editing the layout (In Eagle the outline lines cannot be locked, but a PCB component can be locked).

Do any DipTrace users create PCBs in this manner? In poking around in the tutorial it has the PCB drawn in the PCB Layout Editor as opposed to doing it in the Library.

Not to my knowledge.

You can lock any object in DipTrace, including the Board Outline.

If you still would like to save Board Outlines as separate entities, one possible solution would be to create a special folder for them and save each one as a Gerber file. If this appeals to you, here's how to do it...

Exporting Board Outline Gerber
1) In the Main Menu click on File, select Export in the drop-down menu and then Gerber... in the fly-out menu.
2) Make the appropriate selections in the Export Gerber RS-274X dialog window and click on the [Export] button.
3) Rename the newly-created Gerber file if needed and move it into your new Board Outline folder.

Importing Board Outline Gerber
1) In the Main Menu click on File, select Import in the drop-down menu and then Gerber... in the fly-out menu.
2) Choose the appropriate, previously-saved Board Outline Gerber file.
3) In the import dialog window, select Add in the Import Mode: drop-down list.
4) Select Board Outline in the Convert to: drop-down list.
5) Click on the [Import] button.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

You can manage the library from the library manager.
