I would like to design and build a board that will work with the Arduino to be used for programming Atmel AVR chips. I would like to use a 40 pin ZIF socket. The problem I'm having is trying to figure out how to properly wire it up. The AVR chips range from 8 pin to 40 pin devices. Not every chip has the MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC and GND pins in the same location.

The AtTiny85 chip is an 8 pin device. If I utilize the top 8 pins of the 40 pin ZIF socket, I would be using pins 1-4 and 37-40. The AtTiny84 chip is a 14 pin device which require pins 1-7 and 34-40. Pin 1 of the Tiny85 is Reset to where Pin 1 of the Tiny84 is VCC. How would I create the schematic so that I'm not accidently connecting 2 different VCC pins from 2 different devices to VCC at the same time ? This also goes for the other necessary pins as well.

I hope this isn't confusing. Any assistance is appreciated.

I may not be understanding your question, but let's hope this helps. Connect the Vcc of each chip to the place that you want. Just run a trace is the easy way.

Don't use a Vcc component for things you don't want connected together.
