Brand new user here. Starting over -switching from UltiBoard.

Basic question: How do I get a 14 pin dip socket on a schematic? It is not associated with any particular IC.

You need to create simple component with 14 pins in Component editor, attach DIP-14 pattern to the component and save component library. Now you can place the component from the library to schematic.

I found another method:
Instead of Component library, use patternslibrary.
In patterns/general section, all IC packages are there...
