Hello All,

Just got a new PC w/Windows 8.1. I tried to re-install DipTrace several times and it would not work. It would just hang. I then started up Task Manager and to my surprise it displayed 32 bit mode. I've done this several more times and it still comes up 32 bit mode in the Task Manager. WHY?

Does DipTrace not work with Windows 8.1 in 64bit mode?

Thanks

Howard

My condolences on getting stuck with Win 8.1. :P

64-bit Windows runs 32-bit applications like DipTrace. My guess is that it is the 3D mode that is a problem. Try updating your video drivers.

Another option is try running the application and/or installer as Admin. Win8 is far more picky about permissions than Win7.

DipTrace itself is 32-bit application. But you need to use 64-bit installer for 64-bit Windows. It copies files to proper folders during installation.
Make sure that antivirus on your machine doesn't block DipTrace executable files. If necessary, add them to exception list in antivirus setup.

This isn't quite correct. Windows 7 (and presumably Win 8) bend over backwards to deal with 32-bit installers. Windows generally realizes you are running an installer and does some magic to get the mapping of folders and registry keys correct. Installing a 64-bit app, on the other hand, requires a 64-bit aware installer but the installer itself can be 32-bit. In fact you can create a 32-bit application that tells Windows, "I'm 64-bit aware and stop doing your magic."

Source: I've had to deal with these issues many times in my day job, both for apps I've written and the installers I make for them.
