I'd guess there's another round of beta test to go yet.

Yes, we will publish the latest beta version very soon. I hope it will be the latest beta.

I'm looking for a schema capture/pcb designer and made first steps with DipTrace.
My first impression is very positive and I think there is a surprising load of features.

When (re-)designing a PCB It's likely I have to place and move parts (works fine)
and to add, edit and delete routes a lot of time (in arbitrary order). It seems there is no efficient way to do latter because of the procedure to add a trace:
1. Move cursor to button panel and select "Route Manual"
2. Move cursor back to PCB. Now add a trace as you would expect.
3. Next delete or edit a route
4. To add a further route continue with step 1 and so on.
In other words no "add route" in pad context nor hotkey nor key/focus combination to add a trace?

We have added hotkey (~) to switch to route manual mode. You will be able to try it in the next beta version.

Hello All,

We have updated beta today. This is probably latest build before release - next week we will start stress-test of the beta before release.

Changes if compare to 2.2.9.0 beta:

1. Windows 8 compatibility.
2. "Manual Route" mode hotkey (~).
3. Saving connections without wires while copying/pasting parts in Schematic.
4. Moving objects between pages in Schematic.
5. Rearranging sheets in Schematic (move left/right).
6. Saving open/save dialog initial folders by file type (globally for all programs).
7. Blocking file by the program while editing it. Overwriting by second/network appearance is prohibited.
8. Hide Net Ratlines and displaying all ratlines options has been returned.
9. VRML is exported as solid body (if you have many holes and choose to export them too - issues or importing slowness may still appear).

What plans we have before 2.3 release:

1. Long-line cross cursor option. I have tried different variants of this option implementation - it is not a few lines add, but it is should not be hard.
2. Additional improvements to solid-body making. Existing algorithm can make solid body of the board with few holes (mounting holes, cutouts, etc), to make holes for all pads/vias correctly it needs complete redesign - that will be made after release as this is not 1-day work.
3. "Order PCB" option - ability to order PCBs from Bay Area Circuits with real-time quoting and without need to export gerber/drill files. This feature is already done in PCB Creator ( http://www.pcbcreator.com ), we will just add it to DipTrace. This is good for prototyping and hobbyists (low-cost, manufacturing in US). Probably for large quantities still better to use gerber/drill files and China.
4. Bug-fixes for all new and existing (but not fixed yet) bugs in Mantis (not feature requests).

Where is the latest version allocated? The one available from http://www.diptrace.com/rus/download.php is not working with Windows 8 :(

Hi.

I just tried the 2.2.9.1 beta under Windows 8 (64 bit). The component and pattern editors run, but schematic and pcb crash at startup.

We optimized it in August right after release of first beta - redesigned all conflict features (Win 8 has more security limitations), then it worked without issues.
Just checked source code and all modifications are there, tested on Windows 8 at home PC (virtual machine) and it really doesn't work for some reason now. Will check all at Monday - we are trying to optimize our existing protection for Windows 8, but the best solution will be replacing it completely (will do in 3.0) - unfortunately that means also replacing ALL registration keys for existing 2.x users.

:(

I still think the price difference is significantly higher to order from the US instead of China. I can get 10 proto boards for about $20 - $30 compared to 10 times that price at Bay Area Circuits. I don't see why this is considered a good price.

This option is good for several non-complex (2 layer) boards (actually for us this is way to monetize free-hobby version a bit - many hobbyists ask us to make boards for them thinking we are like Express PCB). Minimum price at Bay Area is about $30 per order + shipping is $6 within US. We tried to work with Chinese manufacturers for that option, but they offer higher prices for proto boards and US guys are much more adequate to work with. Also try to compare pricing in PCB Creator and say PCB Artist. Again this is only option and you can use Gerbers and any manufacturer as usual - what is better for you.
